This is undoubtedly a great book for the absolute beginner to learn web design and how to create a standards-compliant site from scratch, but where do you go next?
The books shown here are just some of the books that I would recommend having completed my book. Build Your Own Web Site the Right Way Using HTML and CSS will give you a great starting point and any one of the books listed on this page will help you add to that solid foundation to achieve web design excellence.

My book gives a good solid grounding of CSS, including layout techniques and other styling. With that knowledge firmly under your belt, any of the books below will teach you a raft of new CSS tricks to wow friends, relatives and pets with.
If you want to add a little more pizzazz to your web page, you might want to call on JavaScript to do the honours. All of the fine books below will teach you just that, and all sticking to web standards, doing things just as they should be.
I briefly touch on the issue of web accessibility in the book, but it's a big topic in its own right. Joe Clark's book Building Accessible Websites is arguably the best one to pick up if you want to fully understand the topic.
The Zen of CSS Design could have been filed on that top shelf up there (under 'CSS') but I've place it down here as I see it as more of a design book than a CSS 'nuts-and-bolts' affair. If you've mastered the inner workings of CSS and have an eye for design, this is the perfect book to finish off your skills completely.
Finally, there's 'the orange book', also known as Designing With Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman, the first book to properly address the issues of web standards for a crowd of eager web professionals. Jeffrey's book will give the all-round round view of standards and how they relate to web design rather than focusing on one specific skill/discipline.
